PRACTICAL GUIDE

Understanding image formats.

Learn which image format works best for your photos, graphics, and everyday projects.

JPG, PNG, and WebP

JPG is the classic standard for photographs and camera shots where universal compatibility matters most, though it does not support transparent backgrounds. PNG uses lossless compression to keep crisp edges, text, screenshots, and alpha transparency intact. WebPcombines the best of both worlds for websites and apps — supporting both photographic compression and transparent backgrounds at noticeably smaller file sizes.

What makes AVIF different?

AVIF is a modern image format built on the AV1 video compression standard. It often achieves smaller file sizes than both JPG and WebP while preserving smoother gradients and full transparency. While all current browsers support AVIF, some older desktop software and legacy upload forms still expect JPG or PNG, making quick format conversion helpful depending on where your image will be used.

HEIC, TIFF, and BMP explained

HEIC and HEIF are used by iPhones and modern cameras to store high-quality photos in half the space of a JPEG, but many Windows apps and websites cannot open them directly. TIFF is favored in scanning, printing, and publishing workflows, while BMP stores raw uncompressed pixel data for legacy desktop software. Converting these formats to JPG, PNG, or WebP makes them easy to share anywhere.

Transparency, quality, and metadata

When you convert a transparent PNG, WebP, AVIF, or GIF into an opaque format like JPG or BMP, transparent regions are filled with a solid background color (white by default, or any color you choose). Lossy formats (JPG, WebP, AVIF) let you trade a tiny amount of detail for much smaller files. Because conversion decodes and re-encodes pixel data directly in your browser canvas, embedded camera EXIF and GPS metadata are automatically stripped for privacy.
